...Animal research has shown that topical application of peppermint essential oil encouraged hair growth (significantly increased dermal thickness, follicle number, and follicle depth) by increasing alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzymatic activity and insulin-like growth factor-1 gene expression (IGF-1). Both ALP and IGF-1 levels are significantly diminished in areas experiencing hair loss, suggesting they plan an important role in hair growth and thickness. Increased ALP activity is also associated with hair staying in the anagen (hair growth) stage longer. Interestingly, peppermint oil increased ALP and IGF-1 levels more rapidly and to a greater extent than minoxidil (a hair loss drug that targets ALP and IGF-1).
